This looks to be one of the seven fabled Orbs of Vandemaar, which were 
druid artifacts, used in the druids' attempt to weaken the power of the evil 
sorcerer Riga.  During the battle several of the orbs were rumored to 
have been destroyed, but apparently a few still remain!  They are worth a 
fortune.  Made out of the rarest of materials, crystal ore taken from the 
moon Trigael, the orb is very fragile and easily damaged.
(Give it to Balthazar at the Observatory in Rune to get a random amount of practices.)
